It began when my daughter's (she's now much older!) 2nd grade teacher asked me to be the class's "COOKING" parent instead of my preferred role of "science parent". I, of course, asked for clarification. The response was, "Make some jam or something". Determined to deliver, I decided to talk with my second grader. We started with a jam recipe. And the state standards. And the history of jam. And why jam didn't spoil. This was just the first step towards a food history obsession and journey through elementary school with cooking to reinforce and support what was being taught in class her class.
